Charter & Captain Bio

Some captains find the water later in life, others are simply born close enough to it that the tide gets in their blood before they ever have a choice. For Captain Jamie Thrappas of Yellow Dawg Charters, the water has always been more than a place to fish. It has been family, work, childhood, freedom, and eventually, the road that led him back to himself. With nearly 20 years as a licensed captain and 14 years running full time, Jamie brings a lifetime of experience to every trip, offering inshore, nearshore, offshore, and extended range Gulf Stream adventures out of the Ponce Inlet area.

Yellow Dawg Charters runs a 25-foot C-Hawk center console with a Cobia tower, new Simrad electronics with side scan, and a 110-gallon fuel tank that gives the FV the range to stretch her legs when the bite makes you earn it. The tower gives Captain Jamie the upper hand when sight fishing for tarpon and cobia, letting him read the water from above and spot those small signs that most people would pass right by. For longer runs, Yellow Dawg also offers extended range trips aboard a 34 Freeman, one of the finest offshore boat brands on the water, outfitted with state-of-the-art Garmin electronics and built to chase the kind of fish that turn good stories into lifelong memories. Both boats can accommodate up to six passengers, though Jamie prefers keeping inshore trips on the C-Hawk at four when possible, because sometimes the best days on the water are the ones with room to breathe.

Long before Yellow Dawg ever flew its name in Florida waters, Jamie was growing up just outside of Baltimore, Maryland, in a family where boats were part of the landscape. His dad, grandfather, brother, and cousin all kept boats at the house, and summer days were often decided by whichever one needed an extra set of hands. The rest of the family was spread across Maryland’s Eastern Shore, many of them commercial crabbers working the Chesapeake Bay the way generations had before them. That kind of upbringing does not just teach a person how to fish, it teaches them how to pay attention, and how to work hard. Building respect for the weather, water, timing, and the quiet pride of doing something right along the way. By 18, Jamie moved to Florida for college, surfing, and warmer weather, never really planning for the water to become his livelihood. Life took him through nearly 10 years in corporate sales before the pull became too strong to ignore. He traded the laptop for his first charter boat, fittingly named The Office, and stepped into the life he had been circling all along. Since then, he has worked with big names like Costa Del Mar & Native Eyewear, owned and operated Coastal Angler Magazine, opened Yellow Dawg Bait & Tackle in Ormond Beach, and stayed woven into the fishing industry from more angles than most people ever see.

These days, Jamie’s reason for fishing has only grown deeper. After recently welcoming two little boys with his wife, Deidra, he has chosen to focus on charter fishing again, not just because he loves the water, but because it allows him to build a life around what matters most. A day on the boat, then home to family. A career that starts before sunrise and still leaves room for little hands, bedtime stories, and the kind of memories that matter long after the fish pictures fade away. That same love for family is also what makes him so invested in the families who step aboard Yellow Dawg Charters. For Captain Jamie, the best part of charter life has always been the people. It is taking a family into the backwaters and watching a kid’s face change forever after their first real fish. It is seeing visitors discover the wild side of Florida that does not show up in postcards. It is watching regular customers come back year after year, their children a little taller, their stories a little bigger, their connection to the water a little stronger. That is the heart of Yellow Dawg Charters- not just catching fish, but giving people a reason to remember the day.

One particular trip that still stands out in his mind came a couple years ago, when Captain Jamie took a family south on a cobia trip with a little more riding on it than bent rods. The father shared that his dad had retired from NASA, and that he had grown up hearing stories about cobia fishing. With a launch scheduled for that morning, his dream was almost impossibly specific: a photo holding a cobia with a rocket lifting off in the background. Captain Jamie explained that cobia fishing is not something you can script; it's searching for rays, sight fishing & making the right cast, and hoping everything lines up. After a quiet morning running south toward Cape Canaveral with no rays in sight, an alarm went off reminding him it was 15 minutes before launch. Almost on cue, he spotted the only ray they had seen all day, with one solid cobia riding on its back. He made the cast, handed the rod over, and the fish ate. Minutes later, with the rocket climbing into the sky and the cobia still fresh on the jig, Jamie handed the fish to the angler for the photo he had hoped for. Adding two big tripletail on the ride back to Ponce Inlet, and it became the kind of day no Captain could promise twice, but every angler dreams of being part of at least once.

Whether you are looking to work the backwaters for snook, redfish, tarpon, black drum, and flounder, or push offshore for cobia, grouper, mangrove snapper, triggerfish, amberjack, mahi, tuna, sailfish, and more, Yellow Dawg Charters brings the experience, the boats, and the kind of fishy instinct that only comes from a life spent on the water. Around here, fishing is not just a trip. It is heritage, and Captain Jamie Thrappas is still carrying his forward, one charter at a time.

Trips aboard Yellow Dawg Charters include: 4/5 HR Backwater trips, 4/5 HR Inshore trips, 4 HR Night Snook trip, 3/4/5 HR Shark trips, 4/5/6 HR Offshore trips (C-Hawk), 6/8/10 HR Offshore Trips (Freeman), and a 12 HR Gulf Stream trip (Freeman).
